A Fast-Growing Hospital Group Connects Multiple Work Locations on a Private and Secure Enterprise Network using TTBS Smart VPN MPLS
Introduction
Founded in August 2017, the organisation is a 300 bedded tertiary care hospital in West Bengal. It received its NABH certification within one year of inception and has been designed with leading-edge infrastructure for quality patient care.
The organisation has a workforce of around 1,000 people and it ranks among the fastest-growing hospitals in eastern India. Its well-equipped departments for general medicine, cardiology, haematology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, plastic surgery and urology among others are known to provide valuable services to patients for quick recoveries and healthier lives.
Some of the clinics, labs and healthcare centres operated by the hospital were located away from the main facility and the organisation needed a private online network to keep all of them connected. To build such links using a Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) service, the hospital’s Information Technology (IT) team contacted Tata Tele Business Service (TTBS).
TTBS, as a leading digital technologies enabler provides seamless and secure multi-location connectivity solutions to workplaces that invest in digitalisation to keep improving their operations. Our team offered an MPLS-based Smart Virtual Private Network (VPN) for the organisation. The telco-agnostic nature of the product and its security features appealed to the customer IT team. They decided to use the same for their Wide Area Network (WAN).
Business Challenges
The hospital sought a cost-effective private network to connect its geographically distanced workplaces. All the work locations needed secure access to the Cloud applications they used and a channel to communicate effectively through voice and video applications.
Although the teams working from healthcare centres, labs and the main hospital campus could connect via any internet service, they wanted highly available private connectivity. The main expectations from a secure and fully-managed meshed WAN include:
- Ability to prioritise traffic for critical applications in case of network congestionAbility to prioritise traffic for critical applications in case of network congestion
- High network uptime and low latency backed by SLA
- VPN routing table to keep traffic flows segregated from the public internet
Primarily, the organisation aimed to have a single Internet Protocol (IP) backbone to connect all its sites end-to-end with built-in privacy. The MPLS and Secure Connect features of TTBS Smart VPN met their requirements better than other options available in the market and it appreciated the comprehensive SLA with the service.
TTBS Solution
Our engineers deployed Smart VPN to build the hospital’s private network on enterprise-grade MPLS. As the solution was telco-agnostic, they used the existing third-party Internet Leased Line (ILL) at the main hospital location (hub) to connect it with all 10 branches.
TTBS was also concerned about the dual last-mile connectivity for all branches as per the data connectivity services they had been using. With MPLS-based Smart VPN, the traffic could move between the hub and spoke locations securely without getting exposed to the threats of public internet services. We used a static routing protocol while building the WAN.
Teams from different locations could collaborate on a high-speed network with low latency and jitter. They also received secure access to Cloud applications.
With Smart VPN, the hospital received a private network with the features that it needed for digitalised workflows:
- Thanks to the Quality of Service (QoS) attribute of MPLS, whenever the network appeared to be congested, TTBS could prioritise the functioning of applications that were critical for patient services.
- The network had SLA-backed low latency and jitter along with high uptime and throughput performance.
- Secure Connect feature of Smart VPN provided security for Layer 2 private network, ensuring that no cyber risks affected the continuity of operations and the safety of data exchanged between teams.
Even if different work locations were using their own data connectivity options for internet service, the organisation was now on a common and secure network built by TTBS Smart VPN. This private network was also scalable for more bandwidth and can include more work sites when required.
TTBS solution improved the performance, uptime and security of the customer network with Smart VPN. The QoS provided by this MPLS solution helped them prioritise applications needed during peak usage hours. TTBS MPLS solution helped them build secure connections between dispersed work locations. It also enabled them to use their voice and video applications more efficiently with low jitter and high throughput.
Benefits
