As the India-based subsidiary of a global healthcare service provider that also serves Central and Eastern Europe - the organisation offers a broad spectrum of medical services. It has an extensive network of clinics, hospitals, special care facilities, fertility centres and diagnostic labs in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra.
The service team treats millions of patients every year and has a clear focus on improving the standards of medical facilities in India. It uses cutting-edge technologies and globally approved protocols for a variety of treatments.
To improve the level of coordination between its geographically spread-out centres, the organisation wanted to connect them on a private online network. It was essential to keep the internal communication and data exchange on this network secure. All the healthcare centres had to be linked to the main head office for constant access to mission-critical applications.
Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) provides its Multiprotocol Label Switching Virtual Private Network (MPLS VPN) solution called Smart VPN to several public and private enterprises in India. Our fibre optic network has coverage of more than 1,32,000 km in the country. We offer multiple last-mile connectivity options and all our solutions are backed by Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) guaranteeing high network availability. The organisation considered such factors before finalising TTBS as its chosen vendor for building the private network.
Business Challenges
The healthcare service provider’s objective was to connect its centres in three states – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra – on a common network. The cost efficacy of the solution was one of the priorities. More importantly, the organisation wanted the service to have high uptime. It could never afford to delay the provision of healthcare services just because the “network was down.” The management team also specified some other expectations from the MPLS service:
- It was critical to keep the data accessed and exchanged via the network secure against malware and other cyber threats
- Due to the use of internet-based voice calling and video conferencing services to discuss patient concerns, there was a need to prioritise the functioning of such applications during network congestion
- Along with the low cost of ownership, the organisation also preferred the ease of managing the network
Although the internet services in different centres were procured from different service providers, the team did not want a complex infrastructure to build a virtual private network.
Lastly, it specified that the uptime and security of the solution had to be backed by an end-to-end SLA.
TTBS Solution
The solution architects from TTBS deployed the Smart VPN solution to connect the organisations’ 27 branches on a private network. They used hub and spoke topology to connect all the locations to the Hyderabad-based headquarters for seamless access to enterprise applications required in daily workflows.
Our Smart VPN is underpinned by the strengths of MPLS, Secure Connect and Internet VPN. It enabled us to configure an enterprise-grade network using the fibre optics, Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) and third-party internet leased lines that were used by different centres for data services. We also built fortified last-mile connectivity for all locations.
TTBS provided an SLA-assured uptime of 99.5% for the network and also met the organisation’s expectations stated earlier:
- Smart VPN’s Secure Connect provided the network with extra layers of enhanced protection against a range of cyber attacks
- With Class of Service (CoS), the network provided the flexibility to prioritise traffic flow on bandwidth-hungry applications during peak usage periods – this helped the voice, video and other critical systems such as Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) related applications to function seamlessly
- The network was easy to manage via a user-friendly dashboard displaying the performance of different applications being used
The private network built using TTBS Smart VPN could also be scaled without expensive investments in hardware and equipment. We could add more sites to the VPN if the organisation needed such an expansion.
TTBS continues to maintain the promised network availability of 99.5% and provides prompt technical assistance to the organisation in line with the SLA terms.
TTBS Smart VPN helped the customer connect its remote branches on a network that is not affected by weaknesses of public Internet services. In particular, they appreciated its security features, SLA-backed uptime and cost-effective scalability.
