A Radio Channel Management Company Upgrades its Network Performance with Smart VPN Solution
Introduction
The company manages a network of private FM radio channels in India. Started in July 2001 in Bangalore, it now has radio stations in more than 30 cities. It also runs internet music portals with a wide variety of music genres.
Over the years, the company’s prime radio channel has won 85 awards from national and international platforms, including Golden Mikes, India Radio Forum, New York Awards and ACEF Awards.
For seamless access to real-time music applications at work, the company needed a faster and more consistent online network than the one the company was using. Its IT team suggested Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology for a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Considering the features of Smart VPN specifically designed for user experience, the team decided to procure the solution from Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS).
Business Challenges
Since its inception, the media house has been actively embracing the changes affecting the radio industry.
FM radio uses several music related applications in real-time, and they need to access them continuously at two of its work locations. However, the unreliable network suffers from traffic congestion and downtime issues and is a major obstacle. The work locations were not even connected properly for secure collaboration between employees and direct access to a shared data centre.
Building a unified MPLS based private network became necessary because:
- Employees need better network speed and bandwidth to run their dataintensive applications efficiently.
- The IT team was looking for quality of service (QoS) to prioritise traffic flow whenever required, and there was a need to monitor network performance.
- High uptime with Service-Level Agreement (SLA) was critical to run the application for optimal user experience.
The media company wanted a telco-agnostic MPLS solution that a single service provider would entirely manage and preferred rapid service deployment.
TTBS Solution
TTBS solution architects offered Smart VPN with MPLS Layer 3 VPN for the radio channel company. It was deployed with 2 MBPS bandwidth to suit music application requirements in both workplaces and help teams utilise them efficiently.
To build a private network, we used a hub and spoke strategy wherein the overall topology is like a wheel, with a central hub connected to the points along the edge of the wheel through multiple spokes. Thus, the structure was built to support all the applications used on the backhaul network.
Smart VPN addressed the organisation’s concerns in several ways:
- Network speed-sensitive applications now run more efficiently with reduced latency, jitter, and packet loss.
- In the event of a congested network, the IT administrators had the QoS features to prioritise the performance of mission-critical applications to run without performance degradation.
- End-to-end SLA ensured network availability and with the use of MPLS protocol, the movement of traffic was not affected by the internet services used by the company at its work locations.
The IT team can monitor the real-time performance of all applications, and improved VPN security has helped the company create its private segments while using public cloud services such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and IBM Softlayer.
With the QoS attribute on MPLS, VPN users can keep latency, jitter and packet loss within appropriate limits to maximise the productivity of real-time and bandwidth sensitive apps. TTBS deployed Smart VPN in the promised timeline, and this secure MPLS solution improved the performance of the customer’s music apps noticeably. They also appreciated our support in connecting their studios on a private network.
Benefits
- Improved user experience with better music performance and other real-time applications for voice and video
- Robust business continuity with SLA-backed uptime and autofailover facility
- Private network to connect radio stations for secure communication
- Readily scalable architecture to meet the company’s new business requirements
- QoS to prioritise latencysensitive traffic during peak hours of network usage
