In addition to its primary services for stockbroking, the company offers a gamut of financial solutions such as primary market operations, mutual funds, insurance, and comprehensive financial planning.
An ISO certified enterprise, the company focuses on upgrading and scaling its infrastructure to deliver the best services to investors. And it constantly builds a rich financial knowledge bank to add more value to its customers’ portfolios.
The company wanted to privatise its online network for quicker and safer sharing of files and deliver more efficient services to customers. Such data service had to give its in-house and mobile workforce seamless access to corporate resources and cloud applications while bypassing the weaknesses of the public internet.
Tata Tele Business Services Smart VPN is an MPLS-based virtual private network solution with Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities to prioritise and manage traffic. Its ability to boost the performance of bandwidth-intensive applications and ensure managed VPN security looked promising to the decision-makers at the company, and they asked TTBS to implement the solution.
Business Challenges
The company at that time was using a vanilla internet service to keep its distributed workforce connected and use business cloud applications. This, however, was not a secure medium for enterprise network traffic.
In particular, there were three challenges that made it difficult for the organisation to work with its existing online setup:
- The two offices with their employees working remotely were not effectively connected to the data centre and did not have direct access to corporate files.
- Business continuity was impacted by unpredictable downtime issues and the speed of the network was inadequate to support the simultaneous usage of VoIP and video-based applications
- The network was neither easy nor cost-effective to scale.
The IT team at the company needed an SLA-backed connectivity service from a single vendor and a web-based portal for ease of network management. They also wanted failover capabilities to ensure that business operations did not suffer if the active data service link went down.
TTBS Solution
TTBS connected the company’s offices and its data centre using Smart VPN – the MPLS based enterprise network solution.
TTBS solution architects used virtual router redundancy protocol (VRRP) between two routers to support online operations if the active link was affected by an outage.
They also connected the company’s two offices and data centre on fibre network with the primary link on Tata Tele Services Limited (TTSL) and secondary link on Tata Communications Limited (TCL) network.
The dual last mile connectivity optimised the network with active-passive failover at all three locations. And the use of any-to-any topology allowed the users at different worksites to communicate seamlessly with each other.
The deployment of this VPN with adequate bandwidth for running cloud-based applications supported the company’s operations in multiple ways:
- Employees working from any location could now access the files stored in the business data centre easily, and collaborate smoothly with each other on a private well-connected network.
- Operations were supported by a reliable uptime of 99.5% backed by an SLA and the redundancy factor helped maintain business continuity in the rare event of an outage on the primary line.
- Smart VPN came with QoS to prioritise bandwidth-hungry applications such as VoIP and video for maximum efficiency.
- The company could add more sites to the network at any time without heavy investments in extra hardware.
