Leading Co-operative Bank Interlinks its Branches on a Low-latency Private TTBS Smart VPN Network
Introduction
The enterprise has been a Pune-based urban cooperative bank operational since 1974. Launched by a group of commerce and economics teachers from the city’s colleges, it runs savings and current accounts and fixed deposit services. The bank also offers a variety of loans and has locker facilities in select branches.
Having earned the trust of thousands of customers over the years, the organisation wished to continue serving them more effectively using digital technologies for internet and mobile banking solutions.
The bank needed a reliable network shielded from the public internet to connect all its branches, and the management team examined Tata Tele Business Services’ (TTBS’) Smart VPN for its suitability. On understanding how effectively this Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based connectivity solution could function within their existing infrastructure, the team asked us to deploy Smart VPN for the bank.
Business Challenges
The bank had invested in bespoke ERP and core banking software systems that all its branches used for customers’ details, financial statements, and other data critical to business operations. They needed MPLS VPN to continue using it on a common platform and safeguard communications between the teams in different branches.
In configuring the private network, the key expectations were:
- The ability to build the network using any internet leased line (ILL), fibre broadband, or UBR connectivity
- High uptime along with low latency, jitter, and packet loss
- Ease of avoiding network congestion and prioritising traffic as per realtime business needs
TTBS Solution
TTBS deployed its Smart VPN solution with L3 MPLS VPN to build the bank’s secure and private network. Our solution architects rigged the hub-and-spoke model whereby all traffic from various branches could flow into the head office branch and get forwarded via the backbone network to reach the data centre and cloud services.
The reliable and scalable service fully managed by TTBS enabled the bank to use its bandwidth-demanding applications more effectively. The network was simultaneously partitioned from the public internet services and was invulnerable to denial-of-service attacks.
Our L3 MPLS VPN also resolved other challenges:
- The MPLS L3VPN default setup was any-to-any connectivity, where all branches’ routers could interconnect seamlessly within the VPN.
- Smart VPN improved the bank’s network uptime as an SLA-backed managed service for all work locations.
- Smart VPN’s QoS feature eased the running of mission-critical applications by prioritising traffic during occasional peaks.
- The bank got a DIY portal to monitor network performance. Our customer support team is always available to promptly handle any service request.
While building the MPLS network, TTBS offered customised bandwidth at all sites, including those with weak infrastructure. We also managed last-mile redundancies to maintain the network’s uptime and keep it adequately robust for time-critical monetary transactions.
With MPLS, the bank could connect its dispersed branches, giving them instant access to the records and applications residing in the organisation’s data centre.
