Well-Known Co-op Bank Connects its Branches on a Secure and Low-Latency Network Using MPLS L3 VPN

With a heritage of 50 years in business, the co-operative bank serves industrialists, textile traders, retailers, SMEs, and individual customers in and around Surat while operating on socialistic principles.

time the bank has adopted advanced technologies and new-age banking tools to serve its customers better. To stay competitive in the market, it offers RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, ATM amenities, and SMS banking, in addition to core banking services. It also has facilities for savings and current accounts and provides a variety of loans and advances to different categories of borrowers.

The bank needed a reliable network service provider to connect all its branches across South Gujarat. The need to have a secure and private connection overcoming the limitations of public internet services was critical. There was also the need to improve the performance of enterprise applications used by the employees.

Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) offers Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) solutions for Virtual Private Network (VPN) under its Smart VPN service. It is a flexible system that transmits and routes network traffic with MPLS as its backbone. Our PAN-India presence and long-standing partnerships with businesses using MPLS VPN encouraged the bank to procure the solution from TTBS.

Business Challenges

bank had to connect its 19 branches with the main branch through the data centre and disaster recovery (DCDR) architecture. The locations were spread across South Gujarat and they needed a single service provider to serve all the branches by building and managing a secure integrated network.

Besides linking the branches together and giving them access to the data centre through a common channel, the bank required MPLS VPN to address a few other challenges:

  • The speed of data services used individually by different branches was not enough to support their simultaneous usage of cloud applications for routine operations and customer service.
  • Network congestion, latency, and downtime issues were frequent – these impacted the employees’ productivity and resulted in poor customer experience.
  • Cyber security was a major cause for concern because the existing internet services used by the branches did not offer adequate protection against sophisticated online threats.

The services that were being used by the branches were not SLA-backed. Not only were they complex but was also costly to scale them.

TTBS Solution

TTBS offered the bank its MPLS Layer 3 (L3) VPN – a component of our Smart VPN service – to connect all 20 offices with their common data centre in Surat.

MPLS L3VPN enabled any-to-any connectivity between the various sites and configured to support Class of Service (CoS) for real-time and enterprise applications. This addressed the challenges that the bank had been facing earlier:

  • Using MPLS engineering through a simple interface, the bank could now prioritise its network traffic and manage the bandwidth as per different applications’ needs.
  • Due to better traffic routing, the network congestion issues were eliminated.
  • By providing an SLA-backed managed service, TTBS proactively monitored the network and ensured reliable uptime.
  • For failover and redundancy benefits, the solution was successfully integrated with other service providers’ P2P links.
  • On this seamlessly integrated network for the bank, our team also fortified the VPN security.

TTBS provided the routers to build the network without any maintenance charge, as it was a managed service. The solution was also cost-effectively scalable to add more branches to the network whenever required.

With its MPLS VPN, the bank could also use solutions offered by cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure securely as the connection was built via a private channel.

With MPLS as the networking protocol, the clients banking app’s performance has improved, and the branches can communicate more securely with each other
