Introduction
Incorporated in 1981, the enterprise is an Indian pharmaceutical company that aims to make speciality medicines available to everyone. Beginning its journey with a small team of 20 people, the organisation today has around 5000 employees. It owns seven manufacturing plants with well-equipped research laboratories and distributes its products to more than forty countries.
The company aims at making speciality medicines accessible to everyone. It has also been recognised for innovation in pharma R&D. Its core philosophy is to focus on the unmet needs of the patients and has a special division working on new drugs discovery for cancer treatments. In 2020, it also supplied huge batches of Chloroquine Phosphate tablets to the US for COVID-19 treatments.
To link its geographically distributed offices on a private and low-latency network, the company needed multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) connectivity. Tata Tele Business Services’ (TTBS) custom solutions under Smart VPN, combined with our PAN-India presence across more than 100 strategic points, encouraged the company to procure their MPLS connectivity from us. After a detailed discussion on how our solutions improve network performance and traffic control, they finalised their decision to deploy Smart VPN.
Business Challenges
While the company’s registered office and corporate headquarters is based in Hyderabad, it has its manufacturing facilities in several cities of Telangana too. It also has pharma and chemical divisions in Chennai, Dehradun, and Guwahati.
To bring such geographically dispersed offices on a fast network segregated from public internet service, it needed secure and managed MPLS connectivity. The main expectations from the solution were:
- Any-to-any connectivity, so that their business sites and remote workforce could exchange voice, data, and video traffic speedily with each other
- Class-of-Service (CoS) capabilities to prioritise traffic, ensuring that the most important or delay-sensitive data packets are delivered first
- Ease of network management and low total cost of
The team wanted to avoid complex infrastructure and preferred an SLA-backed connectivity solution from a single service provider instead of involving multiple vendors in network management.
TTBS Solution
TTBS deployed its Smart VPN solution that builds enterprise-wide connectivity using MPLS technology. Our solution architects used the customer’s existing internet leased line (ILL) service to configure a dedicated, private, and secure network.
All ten branches (spokes) were connected to a central hub at Hyderabad and the network traffic could route from this hub to all spoke locations. We built the last mile connectivity using the data services available at different branches.
As a complete managed service, TTBS Smart VPN set up a network in line with the company’s expectations:
- The default configuration for the MPLS VPN was any-to-any connectivity where routers across the customer’s offices were mutually linked to keep users on a common network.
- To maximise operational efficiency, the customer could use CoS for prioritising certain kinds of traffic during peak usage phases.
- TTBS provided the Smart VPN solution under an end-to-end SLA under which we ensured the network speed, security, and uptime that the customer needed.
With a managed solution and a single bill from TTBS, the organisation also saved upon the network management costs that arise due to services by multiple vendors.
Besides ensuring that data shared between connected offices do not get exposed to the public internet, Smart VPN helps to prioritise critical traffic in multi-application environments.
