Omkar Realtors & Developers is cracking the business of slum redevelopment with the help of a promising SlumView mobile app.
Over the past few years, the slum areas in Mumbai have gone through a remarkable transformation – courtesy the slum rehabilitation scheme introduced by the Maharashtra state government around two decades back.
One such private developer that has managed to crack the business of slum redevelopment, popularly known as SRA, to re-house eligible slum families free of cost in new constructed buildings has been Omkar Realtors & Developers Pvt. Ltd. Having started operations in 2003, it has emerged a leading player in both spaces viz. slum redevelopment and premium residential projects.
“Close to 50 percent of Mumbai’s population live in slums. Slum redevelopment is always a sensitive and critical project to handle. The entire strength of this business is whether you can convince the people to move out and stand by the promises you make,” says Babulal Varma, Co-founder and Managing Director, Omkar Realtors & Developers Pvt. Ltd.
Till date the company has completed 10,000 slum redevelopment houses and is currently working on around 18 projects with 50,000 more houses in pipeline for slum inhabitants. To better execute and speed up these projects it has introduced an innovative mobile app.
“Initially, it took around 3-4 years to complete a slum redevelopment project due to several hurdles right from getting the consent of the inhabitants, to having the necessary paper workin place, and at times using conventional construction technologies. With the roll-out of our SlumView app, we can now match the scale of our projects as all relevant data is captured, there is increased transparency and has helped us in real-time decision making, which is crucial for our business,” says Varma.
